Alpha-fetoprotein blood test

The alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) blood test is used to measure the levels of alpha-fetoprotein in the blood. Alpha-fetoprotein is used as a screening tool during pregnancy to assess the risk of fetal abnormalities like neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly. Outside of pregnancy, the AFP blood test may be used in the diagnosis and monitoring of certain types of cancer, particularly liver cancer.
